A living room can look generous on a floor plan and still feel difficult to cross. In a busy family room, the sofa, coffee table, and television often compete with the route from the entry to the kitchen.
Map the everyday route
Notice where people enter, drop a bag, and head next. Keep that path clear before centering furniture on the longest wall; a slightly off-center sofa can make the whole room easier to use.
Choose pieces by their footprint
Measure the sofa depth and coffee-table reach with painter's tape. Leave enough room to pass without turning sideways, and compare rounded table corners if children or pets use the space.
Measure first, read the care and installation guidance, and compare the complete cost of ownership. A product that fits the room and the household routine is usually a better choice than one selected from a photograph alone.
